Abstract
Despite free tuition and universal study stipends enrolment in and graduation from university is still highly dependent on students’ socio economic background. In this study, we present the results of a school-level randomized controlled trial based on a 20 minute career guidance intervention aimed at reducing social inequality in access to higher education programs in Denmark. The intervention, a 20 minute hybrid information and video session was implemented in a study including 96 high schools in Denmark (42 in intervention group and 54 in control group; N=8.556). The intervention was delivered by professional career counsellors from Study and Career Guidance Denmark. This paper reports results regarding students’ expectation to study at university (intention), collected in a survey directly after the intervention session as well as data on realized application to university (behavior) for those students (20%) who chose to apply right after graduation.
