Károly Fazekas graduated from the Budapest (then Karl Marx) University of Economics in Budapest in 1975. During his university years he was a member of the Rajk László College for Advanced Studies. He has been a researcher at the Institute of Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1975. He defended his doctoral thesis in 1989 at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS); in 2008, he was awarded “private professor of the university” title by the senate of the Corvinus University of Budapest; and in 2012. He was appointed as the Director-General of the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences by the president of the Academy. Károly Fazekas was the president of the Round Table for Education and Child Opportunities between 2007-2009, and co-editor of the publication titled “Green Book for public education in Hungary”. He is one of the organisers of the Sziráki Labour Research Conferences that have been held annually since 1994, and a series editor of the annual “The Hungarian Labour Market” yearbook launched in 2000. In recent years, Károly Fazekas has been examining questions related to economic growth form the perspectives of ethics, political economy, educational economy, and health economy. His studies on these subjects have been published in the following journals and periodicals: Economic Review (Közgazdasági Szemle), Hungarian Science (Magyar Tudomány), Economics (Köz-Gazdaság), The Hungarian Labour Market, while his essays have been published in Figyelő, Népszabadság, HVG, and Élet és Irodalom. Károly Fazekas was appointed as an emeritus researcher of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2019 by the president of the HAS.
